July 13: Things are flowing fine. Doom (sic) macha le, doom (sic) macha le — the song is rocking,” bubbles the Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy Tata Young, her tuneful voice rising over the commotion in the background.

An abandoned shed at a side of the NSC exhibition ground at Goregaon, Mumbai, is where the action is set for four days since Saturday. Thailand’s 23-year-old pop sensation, whose sellout album I Believe is rocking the international charts, is busy shooting a music video for Dhoom, the soon-to-release multi-starrer from Yashraj Pictures.

“The film is about bikes and bikers, and the video is inspired by the film,” explains executive producer Shanab Alam.

Tata takes over: “This video explores my fantasies with these three guys, Uday (Chopra), John (Abraham) and what’s his name …Abhishek (Bachchan). This is the first time that I am singing in a different language.” And the song is set to tune by Calcutta boy Pritam, who is the film’s music director.

On her third visit to Mumbai since May when she came to promote her album, Tata is high on the Indian summer. “It’s been great. The people love me. The food is good. I love everything tikka. And yes, tandoori chicken,” she rattles off. The gastronomic discoveries have added spice to a trip that has also included a spiritual odyssey. “I went to Siddhi Vinayak temple and prayed a lot.” An exclamation is greeted by an explanation. “Oh, I know all about Ganesha. Many people in Thailand believe in Ganesha.”

Tata’s India connection does not end with her belief. “My parents lived here 26 years ago. And everywhere they went there was this name Tata. They thought it’s a cool name for a kid. So here I am, Tata, back in India,” she says. To make the story come a fuller circle, she met Ratan Tata two months ago. “Yeah, I told him about my name.”

Right now, Tata is focusing on Dhoom. The film is not her first view of Bollywood, though. “I have seen Devdas. It’s a great film. Shah Rukh Khan is very talented.” After a day of shooting with Bachchan (Jr), she hopes to do “a Bollywood movie”.

When the music is launched on July 16, it will add another feather to Tata’s crowded crown — winning a nation-wide singing contest beating 5,300 others at age 11, bagging a recording contract with Thailand’s biggest entertainment conglomerate at 14, named one of Asia’s 25 most influential trend-setters by Asiaweek and singing the theme song at the 13th Asian Games at 18, featured on the cover of Time magazine at 21…

Vroooom… goes the roar in the background. Tata Young is revving up for bigger things.
