Rukmini Devi Arundale is well known for her contribution to the renaissance of Bharatanatyam and her creation of Kalakshetra in Chennai. Her birth centenary was observed at Rabindra Sadan for two days by Niharika Center for Performing Arts and Natanam Kalakshetra.
Calcuttans had the opportunity to watch a few reputed and upcoming Bharatanatyam dan-cers of this city. Comparatively young dancers were more conscious about their physique in comparison with the seniors. A dancer must have a supple body without which it’s impossible to perform onstage.
Arkadev Bhattacharya stood out as the best on the first day. He showcased three items. He was successful in discovering and shaping his dance with a distinct style.
The concluding day got under way with Abhay Pal as the solo performer. He staged three items of which padam was the best. The theme dealt with the various pranks played by Krishna with a milkman. His presentation of tillana lacked the grace it deserved. Intricate footwork was was also missing from his presentation.
The budding dancers had subtle gestures, brisk and rhythmic footwork. All aspects of the recital were neat and exquisite. Tastefully costumed and gifted with a fine presence, the dancers could attract audience attention right till the end. Khagendra Nath Barman, interestingly, overcame the disadvantage of his physique and exhibited a solid control over rhythm.
