Sristi, Indrani Dutta’s dance troupe, presented an evening of dance and music on November 19 to celebrate its fourth anniversary at G.D. Birla Sabhagar.
The evening commenced with Tagore’s dance-drama Chitrangada. Conceived and choreographed by Dutta, a senior disciple of Sumitra Mitra and a kathak dancer herself, the production reflected her conviction in the traditional interpretation of Tagore’s creation. The performance was marked by spontaneity, well-synchronised movements and colourful costumes. However, the movements were, at times, monotonous.
Interspersed with short musical pieces — arranged by Debjit — guru guru guru guru ghano megho garaje set the mood of the drama. Dutta, as Chitrangada, successfully conveyed the different shades of the character. An innovative costume along with graceful movements made the performance enjoyable. Santanu Deb Sarkar as Arjun did justice to the character despite limited scope. While Lopamudra Mitra’s expressive rendition captured kurupa Chitrangada in true light, Indrani Sen as surupa Chitrangada was equally impressive. The minimalist set worked as a perfect backdrop.
