Alluring dance collage

Sukalyan Bhattacharya, a brilliant dancer, enthralled the audience with his team at Bharatiyam on April 18 with alluring dance production Srishti rhiti. It was a dance collage based on various classical and other dance forms. Divided into two segments, the programme commenced with The offering, an array of delightful numbers ranging from Durga stuti to Rabindrasngeet. With his signature style and vibrant movements, Sukalyan etched the colour, beauty and glamour of spring in Basanti he bhubanomohini. The song was sung by Lopamudra Mitra. What also stood out was the choreography Dola, depicting the joyous and exuberant homecoming of a new bride in a hand-pulled carriage. It was followed by Journey to the oasis of peace, an interesting choreography based on contemporary dance with martial arts.

Tepid view of Nature

If an exhibition is titled Vehement Expressions, one would expect an art show that stirs the soul and inspires the viewer. In this respect, Mukthi Subramania’s recent solo exhibition at ITC Sonar Bangla, left the viewer disappointed.Subramania’s subject matter ? naturescapes of hill-towns and hamlets in watercolours ? offers quite a rich tapestry to an artist. Even with the clich?s that the artist chooses to work with, the locale provides a large enough palette to present individuality. But the disparity lies in Subramania’s treatment ? while her discerning eye for detail is commendable, the overall presentation is largely tepid.

Engaging the youth

Milaap, an inter-school festival, organised by SPICMACAY Calcutta at St Thomas Girls’ School on April 28 and 29 was rather revealing. The carnival engaged eager students in a plethora of activities from yoga, crochet, toy making and bindi designing with a few classical performances thrown in. And it was nice to see that SPICMACAY, apart from promoting an awareness of our country’s traditions amongst the youth, also promoted other traditional fun activities categorised as “dying art form”. The costume presentation was quite entertaining and the future models pirouetted to the thunderous shouts of their fellow students. The classical dance and the musical performances did have a lot of potential and was melodious, even though some children sang off-key. Overall, it was quite a laudable and well-managed event.
