Q:I am a mechanical engineer with more than four years’ experience in the planning and industrial engineering field. Will it help if I do a cost accountancy course by correspondence?
Shouvik Sarkar
A:I would recommend an in-depth evaluation of what it is that interests you in terms of a career option before narrowing down on the course to pursue. Once you have made up your mind, check with experts in the field and they will be able to guide you better.
Q:I am a 30-year-old graduate working in the demat section of a private bank. The salary that I draw right now is not that great. Will doing an NCFM or an AMFI (mutual fund basic module) help?
Utkarsh Saxena
A:An AMFI or an NCFM certification or even a CFA can help you make the transition from the operations end to a front-end relationship role in banks. And with the private banking and financial services industry poised for a take-off, it can only lead to better options.
Q:I have a BCom degree from Calcutta University and am 40 years old. I possess more than 20 years’ experience in the field of administration and facility management. What course (part-time) should I opt for in order to get a better job? Do let me know of the expenses involved.
Arup Deb
A:You haven’t mentioned your interest area, hence I presume that you would like to continue in the area of facility management. There are several certifications available in that area that can lead to better opportunities within the sector itself. These certifications could also open up options in the emerging real estate industry.
Q:I am a 31-year-old BE (mechanical) graduate working in a state-owned thermal power plant for the last five years. Is it advisable to go for a full-time MBA at my age or is a part-time MBA more advisable?
Javed Haider
A:The fact that you will not get study leave limits your options. However, if possible and if you have the financial means, short-term MBA courses offered by XLRI or ISB are better options. Assuming one is in a position to take time off, a full-time MBA is preferable over a part-time MBA.
Q:I am working as a design engineer in a government sector company for the last one year. Earlier, I had worked in maintenance for about two years. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and want to pursue an MBA by correspondence. Do suggest some institutes that conduct MBA by correspondence. What is a SAP/ERP course? Will it be equally effective?
Dheeraj Nath
A:SAP/ERP is a software that manages enterprise resources. It has several modules. You can find more information at www.sap.com.
IGNOU or the Madurai Kamaraj University can be a good option for pursuing a distance MBA programme.
Knowledge of ERP will definitely help you. However, knowledge without any practical implementation may not prove to be of much help.
Q:I am 39 years old and work in a state-run hospital as a ward master. I am a commerce graduate and have a postgraduate diploma in health care and hospital management from the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Calcutta. I have 20 years’ experience in this field. I am planning to quit this job if I get a job in a reputed private hospital or in any corporate house. Would that be wise? What other options do I have?
Ashis Chakraborty
A:You can try the private sector. Healthcare is an emerging industry in the country and with your experience you should get a good break.
Q:I am a stockbroker in a private company. Will a course in foreign exchange management help?
Himani Talukdar
A:You have not specified your role in the company where you work at present. If the company deals in the area of forex and treasury then it may not be a bad idea to do a short-term course on treasury and forex management.
