Q:I have been working as an executive assistant to the managing dire ctors and CEOs of various multinationals in the hospitality industry and manufacturing units for the past 16 years. However, as far as my education background goes, I am just a graduate and due to various reasons, couldn’t pursue higher studies. At present, I am pressurised to change my job due to financial hardship. Now, what I find is that jobs in my field are scarce and are not as highly paid as compared to other fields. I have been advised to do an MBA in HR, however, I can only afford to do a distance learning course and that too only a short-term one. What specialisation should I take up, if I choose to go for an MBA?
Nandini Mukherjee
A: If you have experience in the hospitality and the services industry, then it is better to go for a short-term course in this industry since these sectors are booming right now. Several retail companies are offering both full-time and short-term courses. You can choose from them. However, do weigh your options carefully before arriving at any decision.
Q:I am 25 years old and am pursuing an MBA in finance from Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur. I have also completed an MCom from Calcutta University. I have a job in a small company which is into the marketing of mutual funds but am interested in the field of equity research. Will this experience help? Or should I opt for a correspondence course like CFA?
Banty Agarwal
A:For equity research, it is better to have a CFA background, so yes ideally, you should do that. Alternatively, if you are able to join a fund house even in marketing or sales, you can join and then complete your CFA and later ask for a transfer to equity research in your organisation, if possible. Otherwise, you can always look for better opportunities and switch jobs.
Q:I have four years of experience as an accountant. However, I left that job as I was pursuing an MCA (master in computer application) from IGNOU. Now I am 32 years old and am working as a part-time lecturer in a private college. However, I want to be a software developer. Is it possible to get a job as a software developer?
Madan Kundu
A: You have not mentioned whether you have completed your MCA or not. If yes, then it should not be a problem, but if not then I would urge you to finish the same as soon as possible.
Q:I’m in CA final year and want to be an investment banker. What course should I opt for?
Peter John
A: Being a CA is sufficient to start off in this sector. The best investment banks are always on the lookout for CAs. The trick is to complete the course fast and secure a good rank in the CA finals.
Q:I am working as a merchandiser in an export company (manufacturing shoes) for the last one and a half years. I have completed my BCom and DOEACC ‘O’ level and am waiting for my LLB third year result. Should I go for an MBA-HR (distance learning) or MSW?
Gaurav Sharma
A: As a merchandiser in the semi-durable industry, you are right in the middle of a boom curve as the fashion and retail industry opens up. If retail continues to interest you then a focussed course in retail management or merchandising may be of greater value.
