Zonal school athletics begins

Sumanto Gorai and Joydeep Nandi won the 100m sprint in the junior and senior boys' categories, respectively, on the opening day of 21st ASISC Zonal Athletics Meet at Sumant Moolgaokar Stadium in Telco, Jamshedpur, on Friday.

Gorai, a student of Gulmohur High School, clocked 11.50 seconds while Hill Top School's Joydeep Nandi won the race in 11.50 seconds.

Deepika Singh (Hill Top School) and Monika Tudu (RVS Academy) lapped up the 100m honours in the junior and senior girls' sections, respectively with 13.87 seconds and 14.65 seconds.

I. Shobit (Gulmohur High School) and Avinash Singh Yadav (Little Flower School) excelled in the 400m for junior and senior boys' categories by finishing the race in 53.4 and 58.5 seconds, respectively.

Athletes from Sacred Heart Convent and Little Flower displayed the prowess in the 800m race for junior and senior girls. While Sarah Sharma claimed the junior medal in 3 minutes and 02.4 seconds, Sacred Heart's Priya Kumari took 3 minutes and 04.4 seconds to win the event in senior category.

Vikash Kumar Singh of Hill Top won 1500m race for junior boys in four minutes and 47.8 seconds. Little Flower added one more gold to their kitty, thanks to Akankshit Hembrom, who picked the top slot in senior section with a timing of four minutes and 53.1 seconds.

The meet, which is being hosted by Gulmohur, Kerala Samajam Model School (KSMS), Dayanand Public School and Tarapore School Agrico, was declared open by Tata Motors sports head Cornel Kanwer Jitender Choudhary.

Zonal co-ordinator and ADLS Sunshine School principal Indrani Singh, her Gulmohur counterpart Sunita Sinha, Tarapore School principal Amy Bilimoria, Dayanand Public School principal Swarna Mishra and KSMS principal Nandini Shukla were present on the occasion.
