Hazaribagh: A 24-year-old man, waiting to meet his girlfriend on her college campus here on Friday afternoon, was stabbed to death by her brother who didn't approve of their love affair.

Vishal Kumar, a graduate from Markham College of Commerce but currently unemployed, first had a war of words with Pintu Kumar (23) on St Columba's College campus in Birua Colony before the latter flashed a knife and stabbed him six times in the stomach around 2.15pm.

Vishal's girlfriend, an arts student at the college, was not present at the scene, but others who were rushed the profusely bleeding youth to Hazaribagh Sadar Hospital, 2km away, where he was declared brought dead.

Officer-in-charge of Korrah thana outpost Rama Shankar Mishra said Pintu was arrested from St Columba's campus, where he was being held captive by students.

"We didn't find the murder weapon though. It is primarily a case of hate murder. The assailant didn't like the victim having an affair with his sister," the officer said.

Sources said both the families lived in Kud area of the town. While Vishals' father was a mason by profession, Pintu's father was a small-time businessman. Pintu, a Part-II student of the same college from where Vishal graduated a year ago, incidentally, was in love with the latter's sister, which Vishal of course didn't like.

Doctors at sadar hospital said that Pintu stabbed Vishal in a fit of rage was evident from the wounds that the youth succumbed to. Several of Vishal's internal organs were ruptured during the attack, they said.

This, incidentally, isn't the first murder at St Columba's, which is one of the oldest educational institutions in town. In 1993, an undergraduate student was shot dead in a queue while depositing his fees. Several student group are engaged in a war of supremacy on the campus.
