Jamshedpur, Nov. 16: Police today arrested a woman and her aide for allegedly trying to extort a huge amount from a resident of Ashiana Sun City near Baliguma under MGM police station area.
The woman, Uma Devi, and her aide Rajesh Murmu, who were working as domestic helps in the households of Sun City, would try to extort rangdari from their masters’ houses. For operating the racket, she had at least four goons in her syndicate. The maid had as many as three cellphones, which she would use in perpetrating the crime.
In this connection, the police had, on October 27, registered a case of extortion against unknown persons on the basis of an FIR lodged by Ramanand Prasad Sinha, a resident of Sun City.
But the arrest was made after Murmu deposed before a judicial magistrate in connection with the extortion bid, leading the police to add the names of Rajesh Murmu, Ajay Goud, Arjun Goud and Suraj Goud in the case.
According to the FIR, Uma Devi, who worked as a maid in many households in the Sun City, had attempted to intimidate the residents of the colony by sending anonymous letters demanding money.
A gang of criminals had, on September 9, sent a letter to Sinha, claiming that they would kill him and his son.
According to the FIR, the maid had demanded Rs 5 lakh from Sinha, who is a former executive of Tata Motors. The sources said, instead of informing the police, Sinha kept mum over the extortion bid. But on October 27, similar letter was recovered from a corner of his house. This time Sinha’s wife had watched a youth from near her house.
