Sindri-born and Calcutta-based classical singer of repute Debapriya Adhikary (33), who came home to meet his parents, wants the state government's help to promote classical music in Jharkhand for which he plans to meet chief minister Raghubar Das soon.
Debapriya, whose father D.D. Adhikary and mother Anita Adhikary are both employees of Fertilizer corporation of India, Sindri, said before leaving for Calcutta on Thursday,: "The state has enough talent in classical music arena. Establishing a music academy here will help nurture such talent."
He also hopes to bring top classical artistes and young maestros of the country to perform in the state for which he wants state support.
"It is easy to get instant success but tough to sustain it, if basics are not right," Debapriya, who completed his schooling from Model School in Sindri in 2000 and graduation in English honours from Sindri College, said. He cited examples of many TV reality shows, where winners fizzle out soon when shows get over.
Debapriya, who runs a non-profit trust SUR (Sublime Urge to Rejoice) in Calcutta, an effort to bring the arts and artistes together, has sitar player Samanwaya Sarkar, US-based fan and friend Anirban Bhattacharyya and his younger brother Anirban as partners.
The trust works for the underprivileged kids. Fifty students from humble homes are being taught the basics of classical music there.
The trust has also been holding three-day music festivals since last couple of years to promote contemporary artistes from eastern region.
"We can also establish a similar forum in Jharkhand for the promotion of talent as awards and recognitions encourage people to work hard," said Adhikary.
Debapriya has performed with Samanwaya around the globe in global music festivals, including WOMAD festival in UK, Theatre des Abbesses, Paris, Deia International Music Fest in Spain and Parramasala in Australia, among others.
He and Samanwaya were also invited by National Theatre of Opera and Ballet of Albania to celebrate the birth centenary of Mother Teresa.
The duo have directed a documentary Girija - A Lifetime in Music, on their guru Girija Devi, which was recently awarded the Best Documentary Feature by Los Angeles Independent Film Festival.
