Jamshedpur, Nov. 4: For a change, performance of cricket umpires is being scrutinised by coaches.

Introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to improve the standard of umpiring, men in black-and-white at the centre will now have to be more careful — both in their conduct and show — during Ranji Trophy matches.

Apart from the captains, performance of the umpires will also depend on the kind of report card an umpires’s coach prepares. Captains generally submit their assessment about officiating umpires after the conclusion of a match.

“It’s a new concept introduced by the BCCI to improve the standard of umpiring. The umpires will be judged by respective coaches, who are appointed by the board,” Subrata Porel, the former Bengal player, told The Telegraph.

The 56-year-old Porel, who retired in1984, has been appointed coach of umpires and is making his debut in the new role at the ongoing Jharkhand-Madhya Pradesh Plate Group Ranji tie at Keenan stadium.

A BCCI panel umpire, Porel added that positive and negative aspects of the umpires are taken into account while assessing their performance in a match. “The performance of the umpires is being monitored by eight cameras, which are installed at vantage locations on the ground. Various aspects related to the show of umpires on one particular day is discussed in the evening by watching the video footage,” he explained.

The report would be sent to S. Venkataraghavan, the BCCI director of umpiring, who heads the 13-member panel of coaches for umpires. Each of these coaches has been assigned six Ranji matches being played at different centres.
