Triple records on track Day One

Jamshedpur, May 20: Three new meet records, including one by Jharkhand’s Anmol Ratan Tete, were created on the opening day of the fourth Federation Cup (Junior) Athletics Championship at the JRD Tata Sports Complex today.

Nineteen-year-old Tete, of Simdega, clinched the men’s 400m gold to set a new meet record of 47.65 seconds while Gurkirat Singh of Punjab bagged the men’s javelin gold to set a new mark with 69.25m.

Kerala’s C. Clinton also created a new meet record in long jump with 7.62 m. Tete shattered Shakil Shamsher’s (West Bengal) record of 47.84 seconds, created in the inaugural Federation Cup athletics meet in Bangalore in 2001. Singh broke the javelin throw meet record of 68.79m set by Om Narayan of Haryana in the Bangalore Federation Cup while Clinton zipped past the meet record of Shiv Shankar, who leaped 7.61 m in the Mumbai Federation Cup in 2002.

“I am extremely happy to have created a new meet record. I’ve worked really hard and was confident of doing something extraordinary in this meet,” Tete told The Telegraph after pocketing the 400m gold. Uttar Pradesh won the most number of medals today. The state won 12 medals (two gold, five silver and as many bronze) while Haryana with nine medals (three gold, five silver and one bronze) came second in the medals tally.

Delhi with eight medals (three gold, two silver and three bronze) is placed third.

Surender Singh of Haryana and Pavneet Kaur of Delhi emerged the fastest athletes of the meet by clinching the gold in the boys’ and girls’ 100m race respectively. While the former clocked 10.61 seconds, the latter took 12.29 seconds to reach the finish line. Vishal Saxena of Uttar Pradesh and Shijila V.D. of Kerala bagged silver in the boys’ and girls’ categories respectively. Bronze went to Rahmatulla Molla of West Bengal and K. Rama Devi of Andhra Pradesh.

Ajay Kumar Patel of Uttar Pradesh won the boys’ 10,000m gold in 32:58.77s while West Bengal’s Mita Devi bagged the honour for the girls’ 5,000m in 19:10.39s.

The girls’ 400m gold was claimed by A. Anbubimla of Tamil Nadu, who clocked 57.20 seconds. Mandip Kaur (Jr) of Punjab finished second at 57.30 seconds.

The bronze went to CBhuvanehshwari Devi of Tamil Nadu.

Pooja Kumari of Haryana pocketed 100m hurdles gold by clocking 14.86seconds while S Divya Sugumaran of Tamil Nadu finished second at 15.50seconds. Pooja later went on to also claim the girls long jump gold witha leap of 5.88m.

Bihar's Sarwesh Kumar Singh picked up the gold in the boy's pole vaultwith a leap of 3.90 m while P Sivashanmugham claimed the silver.Gurwinder Singh of Punjab claimed the gold in the girl's hamme4 throw at46.62 m.

Gold in the boy's 100m hurdles was claimed by G Senthil Velevairva ofTamil Nadu with a timing of 15.47 seconds.
