Jamshedpur, Sept. 25: Even if one has forgotten to wear a wristwatch or is too lazy to check up the time on one’s cellphone, there is no need to ask strangers for the time while on the move.
One just needs to be in the vicinity of a clock tower.
An initiative of Lions Club International, a clock tower is all set to make its presence felt in Jamshedpur soon, either at the Jugsalai roundabout or the vacant space opposite the Keenan Stadium.
Costing an estimated Rs 3 lakh, the clock tower would be waterproof and be brightly lighted to ensure that the hands of the clock are visible even from a fair distance.
Surrounding the tower would be a canopy to protect it from inclement weather.
Currently, work on the actual design of the clock is going on.
Lions Club hopes to come up with either a two or a three-faced clock to make visibility of the clock easier.
“It is indeed a great pleasure to announce the establishment of the clock tower in Jamshedpur. We were looking at a long-term involvement with the city people,” said Rajnish Kumar, the region chairperson of the club.
Interestingly, public interest messages such as those on safety, traffic announcements and health would also be displayed in the tower.
Messages would also include announcements of Lions Club activities.
Lions Club International proposes to change the displayed messages after a stipulated time.
“We may decide to change a message after a fortnight,” said Kumar.
Around the clock tower, talks are on to construct a fountain to beautify the structure and the area it would come up on.
However, Jamshedpur is no stranger to clock towers.
The proposed clock tower would be the second clock tower in the city.
The centennial clock tower — set up by Rotary Club to coincide with its centenary year celebrations — was established in January 2005, at the Bistupur roundabout facing the Regal Building. It is now a familar landmark of the steel city. Residents would now wait for the second one at the place chosen by Lions Club.
