Ranchi, March 21: Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) will try to reach a consensus with all stakeholders or work out new holding tax rates as per their suggestions when the authorities meets tomorrow.
In future, the same rates of holding tax (which were last assessed in 1992-93) maybe implemented in all civic bodies (precisely 38, after the creation of Dhanbad Municipal Corporation) of the state.
The proposal to increase the holding tax rates “many time” by RMC without mandatory consent from the stakeholders — residents — compelled the urban development department to send back the proposal to it with a directive to take due consensus and suggestions from people, said RMC administrator Binay Kumar Choubey.
The meeting, to be chaired by Choubey, is expected to be attended by a cross-section of people. RMC sources said they had invited all major associations, including Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Indian Medical Association, Ranchi District Bar Association, Engineers’ Association, former ward councillors, political party leaders among others.
“Citizens consensus is necessary before implementing anything. The earlier proposal, sent to the urban development department, is now under consideration and final holding tax rates will be decided taking the stakeholders into account,” Choubey added.
Normally, holding tax rates are subject to revision every five years, said urban development secretary R.K. Shrivastav, but since the past 15 years “no revision took place”.
Although there are only 75,000 houses as per RMC record, sources said the number has increased manifold.
