Ranchi, May 4: The state government declared in the Jharkhand High Court that the writ filed by the Tata Iron and Steel Company to form an industrial township at Jamshedpur is premature and should be dismissed.

While hearing the case related to the formation of a municipal corporation at Jamshedpur, advocate-general A.K. Sinha said the government has still not decided whether to set up a corporation or an industrial township in the city.

Sinha said that the steel company provides civic amenities to residents within its command area, but the residents of other adjoining areas such as Mango, Jugsalai and Adityapur are left out.

The company also collects taxes for the amenities provided by it which is the sole prerogative of the state as per the Constitution, Sinha said.

The government has invited objections from the public to know about their choice and will then decide on the matter.

The steel major, on the other hand, contended that it provides the necessary civic amenities like drinking water and sanitation to the public and hence an industrial township should be set up in the city. The matter will again be taken up on May 8.
