Ranchi, July 14: The circular distributed by St Xavier’s College stating the do’s and don’ts for freshers has been received with a pinch of salt by them.

According to the rules, students have been strongly recommended not to use sunglasses, or wear trousers with more than four pockets. They have also been prohibited from sporting tight and round collared T-shirts.

Girl students are supposed to tie their hair and come to college. They are also requested not to wear sleeveless dresses, short tops and tight jeans.

The college administration has directed the students not to play recorded music on mobile phones once inside the college campus.

However, the students were seen wearing jeans and short tops and sporting sunglasses after classes for Intermediate and graduate levels began on July 7.

Senior students of the college were seen loitering in the college campus violating the rules.

“We are not supposed to wear sunglasses. This is a rule imposed by the college administration. If seniors don’t abide by them even after studying here for three years why should we pay heed to the notice,” said Priya Singh, a first-year student of history (hons), who was in jeans and a short top.

First year student of political science (hons), Mihika Kumari, too, noticed students flouting the dress code.

“When I was entering the college in the morning I saw many girls with flowing hair. I thought they were senior students but later on I found out that they were freshers from the economics department,” Mihika said.

“People here don’t follow rules. If the college authorities are really serious about implementing strict discipline in the college, they should appoint a students’ body for checking on a regular basis. Everyday we see these freshers coming in trousers with four pockets, round collared T-shirts and using mobile phones on campus,” said a third-year student of history (hons), Ameeta Singh.

“Even though the college authorities have asked them to come in clothes such as salwar kameez they are hell-bent on flouting the rules.”

Principal of the college Father Nicholas Tete said he would take action against the violators. “We are going to seize their identity cards. Students will not be allowed to enter the campus if they are flouting the dress code,” he said.

Tete said the aim of the circular was to promote dignity and respect among students. “Through this circular we have tried establish a proper code of conduct,” he added.
