Martyrs, national leaders and great thinkers are inspiring the inmates of Ghaghidih-based observation home and children's shelter not only from books, but walls as well.

The East Singhbhum district social welfare department has put up photographs and paintings of patriots and martyrs on the walls of the twin addresses at Ghaghidih, around 6km from Jamshedpur, so that the children lodged there can see these personalities 24X7 and inculcate their values in life.

This is the first time that any of the 10 observation and children's homes of Jharkhand has taken such a step to educate destitute children and those in conflict with law.

While the Ghaghidih children's home has 13 occupants, there are 17 inmates at the adjacent observation home on the sprawling 1.5-acre plot.

"We earned praises from Unicef and also from Jharkhand Legal Service Authority (Jhalsa) for taking this innovative step wherein we painted portraits of great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, BR Ambedkar, Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda on the walls of all rooms and also the boundary separating the observation home from the children's shelter to create a lasting impression on the minds of these children. and director of DRDAPaintings of great leaders have been drawn even on the seven feet boundary wall (along with 2 ft barbed wire) separating children home with observation home.

This apart, the district education department has appointed a teacher through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan to impart basic education to the children.

There is also a counsellor, who visits the students and speaks to them about good, moral deeds besides helping them cope with any emotional turmoil that they might have undergone.
