Ranchi, July 9: Former Congress heavyweight and veteran coal union leader Chandra Shekhar Dubey, alias Dadai Dubey, was arrested today for allegedly misbehaving with Garhwa superintendent of police (SP) Priyadarshi Alok.

Dubey, who had won the Vishrampur Assembly seat in 1985, 1990, 2000 and 2009 on Congress tickets and went on to become rural development minister in the Hemant Soren government besides winning the Dhanbad Lok Sabha seat in 2004, has been booked under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code, apart from a few more sections related to hurting others through verbal abuse and damaging public property and official documents.

Although Dubey's supporters hit the streets against him<>. Thereafter, he was produced before the district's chief judicial magistrate, who remanded him to 14 days judicial custody.

If convicted, Dubey faces two years' imprisonment.

A resident of Choka village in Kandi, Garhwa district, local police had provided Dubey four house guards and two bodyguards. On June 25, two of his house guards were withdrawn following their transfers as rules say that a constable cannot serve at a particular place for more than 10 years. Yesterday, two new house guards were sent, but Dubey was not happy with them, saying they were not fit.

Today, the former Congress leader called on the SP, demanding young guards.

"I politely told him that district police had its constraints and if he was not satisfied with his house guards, he should file a written complaint. He lost his cool and started using foul language. He also overturned chairs and tore apart certain important documents lying on my table," the SP alleged told The Telegraph.

Dubey could not be contacted for his comments, but his son Abhay Kumar Dubey refuted the allegations.

Abhay claimed that recently, Dubey had met senior police officers in Ranchi, including DGP D.K. Pandey and Special Branch ADG Anurag Gupta, who promised him Y-category security and asked him to approach Garhwa SP.

"Today, he had an appointment with Garhwa SP at noon. But the SP refused to appoint security guards to him just because he was carrying letters of the DGP and ADG. My father's blood pressure shot up and he tried to have medicines. But the SP snatched his medicine bottle," Abhay said.

Dubey fell out with the Congress and joined the Trinamul Congress in 2014 when his party decided to support JMM candidate in Dhanbad Lok Sabha seat.

State unit Congress spokesman Ajay Rai refused to comment, arguing that Dubey was no longer a party member.
