Ranchi, April 22: Congress leader Neeranjan Sharma did not reveal much during his two-day police remand and stuck to the claim that he was innocent.

Sharma and his employee Sudhir Sahu were sent back to Birsa Munda Central Jail today after the end of their police custody.

Superintendent of police (city) Manoj Ratan said: “Sharma kept reiterating that he was innocence. He said he was caught while carrying a bag to Rama Khalkho’s car. He did not give any new information.”

Sharma and Sudhir, arrested in connection with the April 7 cash seizure from a Ranchi hotel ahead of the mayoral elections, were produced before the court of special judge (state vigilance) Abni Ranjan Kumar Sinha around noon today as a legal formality.

They were accompanied by the officer-in-charge of Lalpur police station Jitendra Kumar Singh and some policemen. Both informed the judge that police did “not misbehave” with them during interrogations and they were “alright”.

However, the Congress leader did not say much when asked about the Rs 21.9 lakh found in the hotel and his role in it. “No comment. I have full faith in the judicial system,” a handcuffed Sharma said before leaving the court.

Queried about his health, he said: “Expect blood pressure, everything is normal right now.”

Police are yet to find mayor Rama Khalkho, who is at the centre for the cash-for-vote controversy. “Efforts are on to trace him,” Ratan said.

Her anticipatory bail petition, filed on April 17, will be heard on April 25.
