You were deputed in the city earlier. Has the crime increased from then?
Atul Tiwari, Mango
The law and order situation in the district is satisfactory, compared to other parts of the state. The situation has improved after the creation of the new state. But much is to be done by the police machinery to ensure peace and harmony.
Incidents of loot and vehicle thefts have increased in the city over the past few months. Are the police lacking in efforts?
Ashoke Sen, Golmuri
There have been incidents of loot and vehicle thefts in Golmuri and Bistupur areas recently but we have taken the cases seriously and have also succeeded in identifying the gangs who are involved in such crimes. There is an increase in crime between April and June, when the marriage season is at its peak. To avoid incidents of loot, people, especially businessmen, should seek police help when they withdraw large amounts of money and valuables. We are ready to provide escort facilities, which could prevent looting incidents. To prevent vehicle thefts, we have implemented city-sealing plans in the entire district. Attempts are also made to connect police outposts through a wireless network. In most of the cases, it was found that culprits involved in vehicle thefts flee the city. Therefore, we are trying to strengthen the network of the outposts at the city entry points at Kharkai bridge, Dimna Road and Olidih.
What will be the priority of your department?
Utpal Chatterjee, Sonari
My priority will be to control crime effectively and to bridge the gap between the police and public. The police-public cooperation could aid crime control. It is not true that people do not get a positive response from the police in an emergency. Necessary instructions have been given to subordinates. People should feel free to discuss their problems with the police. Specific complaints could be brought to notice and necessary action would be taken without delay.
Do you have a specific strategy to rein in the criminals active in the district?
Arshad Khan, Mango
The strategies are being made by the district police to rein in criminals. An initiative has been taken to form special task forces to check the incidents of crime in the district.
The Tatanagar station area has become a hotbed of criminal activities. Do you have plans to control crime in this area?
Sunil Srivastava, Jugsalai
The station area houses a large number of slums where criminals often take shelter. We have asked residents of the area to verify the identity of the person before sub-letting them. We have also asked the people to provide details of the new tenants. We are also planning to organise police-public meetings in the area at regular intervals to bridge the gap between police and public.
Do you think additional police personnel is required to effectively monitor crime in the district?
Atul Kumar, Sakchi
I don’t think additional workforce is required to effectively monitor crime. The present police strength is sufficient. Organised planning could improve the the present workforce.
There has been a spurt in extremist activities in Dumaria and Ghurabandha areas of the district. How do you plan to control the rising extremism in these areas?
Srichand Jha, Bistupur
Attempts are being made to flush out the rebels who have taken shelter in Dumaria and Ghurabandha with the help of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The CRPF have foiled several extremist attempts to disturb peace in the area. The district police, in association with CRPF personnel, have been handling the situation well.
Are there sufficient vehicles in the district for mobile patrolling? Are there plans to increase the number of vehicles?
Jeetendra Kumar Singh, Namda slum
I admit that the number of vehicles for mobile patrolling is inadequate. In this connection, the authorities at the police control room have approached the police headquarters in Ranchi for supplying more vehicles for patrolling. The vehicles would be equipped with modern gadgets to improve communication and patrolling. This will also help in crime control.
