Jamshedpur, Feb. 13: Students at Dayanand Anglo Vedic (DAV) School, Bistupur, will soon be able to hear the lessons they missed at school sitting at home, thanks to the radio.

If all goes according to plan, the school will become the first in the steel city to have its own localised radio station. ?We have decided to start a radio station, which can also be used to interact with parents and teachers,? said principal S.P. Sharma.

?We will use the time to make important announcements,? said Sutapa Ghosh, a teacher involved with the project, adding that parents and teachers will be informed in advance.

A special aspect of this radio station, apart from imparting information, will be the repeat of classroom lessons. ?A particular teacher will speak on a selected subject everyday. So students who have missed out a particular lesson can get the information sitting at home,? said Sutapa.

Two teachers with AIR training will impart training to the students.

There will also be an entertainment slot for students to try their hand at broadcasting.

The station services will initially be available to residents of the Bistupur area. Later, depending on the response, it could be extruded, said Sharma.

The concept of Community Radio System (CRS) or localised radio, is fast becoming a tool for effective communication. It has been picked up as the model for setting up the school radio station.

The project is designed according to the guidelines set by Webel Mediatronics, a Calcutta-based public undertaking, involved in development, manufacturing and turnkey project jobs in the field of studio and broadcasting.

The radio station will start functioning once the final project is approved by the school?s management committee.

?Our group only works on setting up low-power radio stations with educational institutions,? said Enakshi Chatterjee, project in-charge of CRS, Calcutta.

Back in the steel city, authorities at DAV had initially decided to seek help from the Jamshedpur unit of the All-India Radio (AIR).

The school has asked for a 30-minute slot from AIR everyday. AIR estimates that the average cost of a 30-minute slot will come up to Rs 3,000.
