Ranchi, July 1: One of the most elaborate sample surveys ? of households, consumption pattern and employment ? in the state is going to commence shortly.

Undertaken by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), the survey is being taken up after a gap of five years in all the districts of the state.

Described as the 62nd round of sample survey in Jharkhand, it is expected to provide valuable insights into the contribution of the unorganised sector to the state and national income. Consumption pattern, consumer expenditure and employment opportunities are some of the areas to be surveyed.

The NSSO organised this week a training camp to brief the field staff on how to carry out the survey, being conducted for the first time by the organisation independently. Earlier, surveys were conducted in coordination with either the Planning Commission or the planning department of the Bihar government.

The organisation monitors the economy around the year and has a Jharkhand chapter here. Though official spokesmen were tightlipped on the indices, the scenario in the state, they admitted, is anything but bright. Migration of people from rural to urban areas continues unabated in Jharkhand; the average family-size continues to be large and the employment scenario continues to be grim. Even the year-old national employment guarantee scheme has failed said the deputy director of the survey design and research division, P.K. Banerjee.
