Ranchi, Feb. 21: They were given only a minute to prove extempore speech talent.
JAM (Just a minute) was organised by the Debating Society of BIT extension centre at Lalpur to nurture ?all round development? of students of the institute.
Anushree, a BBA student who got the first prize, was given five words ? phone, friendship, parties, accident and meet. She received applause from the audience when she described: ?I met my husband over phone and became friends. Then we had attended a party in neighbourhood where we met accidentally and continued chatting over our cell phones. Our continuos interaction resulted in marriage.? She said the incident, which she described, is somewhat similar to the real life situation where she married her boy friend.
Out of 40 participants at the event, three prizes were given away. While the second prize winner was V. Radha Murthy, a BCA student, the third prize went to Smriti Sudha, a BBA student, where she used five words ? robbers, monkey, graveyard, police and steal ? to describe her story.
While elaborating, Sudha said a gang of robbers after stealing went to a graveyard to celebrate where they found a group of monkeys sitting on the trees who were teasing them. To chase these monkeys the robbers started firing which was heard by local policemen who reached the graveyard and caught hold of the thieves. In this way monkeys helped the police nab the robbers.
Another participant, Sweta Sahay, a student of BBA said the moral of her story was just to convey that one should not go for evil means to get fruit of success. ?I got five words mainly ? tree, monkey, garden, owner and stone to build my story. There is a character who goes to garden and throws stone on a monkey to get mangoes. But very soon the owner arrives and catches the culprit and punished. The moral of the story is that one should always follow right path to taste the fruit of success,? she added.
Arindip Diwan, secretary of the association, said the 20-member society was set up in 1998. The programmes are sponsored by IMS, Career Launcher and computer institute, RIIT. ?The society organises Catalyst, which is a mock CAT examination prior to the start of the CAT examination. It also organises debate, extempore and elocution competition,? he added.
