Ranchi, Nov. 6: Twelve hours after postman Chaman Sahu (52) was killed near Institute of Science and Management here, 10 of his relatives have been arrested for involvement in the murder.

Sources said the relatives had some dispute with the postman over a two-acre plot in Pundag. A police source said: “The relatives wanted to sell some of the land but Chaman had opposed the idea. This led to a dispute.”

Additional police superintendent Prabhat Kumar said they were looking for one more person, Bali Sahu, to get concrete evidence in the case. “Bali had threatened Chaman with dire consequences several times. We tried to arrest him last night but failed. We will find something concrete in this case once we take Bali in custody,” he added.

The arrested Sahus include Keshru, Rijhwa, Dasrath, Rajendra, Bhuran, and Dugun.

The arrests helped the police pacify a mob at Pundag, the native place of the victim. They postponed their plan to block roads and observe a city bandh to protest against the incident.

Three motorbike-borne people had shot the postman to death when he was going to his village on his scooter.

Chaman was associated with the BJP and Teli Society in Pundag. After the shooting last evening, residents of the area had blocked Argora Chowk for an hour to protest against the incident.

Police said cases related to deaths due to land disputes have been registered at Kotwali, Dhurwa, Namkum and Doranda police stations.

“Kailash Verman, Dhirendra Singh, Lal Deepak Nath Shahdeo, Ramadhar Singh, Lachu Pahan, Arman Sabir alias Dara, Surendra Rai alias Raja Ji, Gautam Verma and Panna Lal Mahto were among those who killed in land disputes,” said a police official.

Though the police have made a breakthrough in the murder, no such develop- ments have occurred in the killing of coal trader Javed Akhtar (45).

Two armed men had gunned down Akhtar on October 31. The incident had occurred near Anand Gas Agency’s godown, under Argora police station.

An FIR was lodged against one Amrendra Tiwari, a resident of Dhurwa.
