Ranchi, Aug. 26: Criminals in the state will not remain ?faceless? for long. The police department is all set to introduce the latest ?Portrait Software? to sketch out images and faces of such law-evaders.
Deputy inspector-general (provisions) S.N. Pradhan confirmed that the state police had written to the National Police Academy (NPA), Hyderabad, for the software.
?We had a software that could sketch portraits of criminals. But now it has become outdated and is not as efficient as it used to be. As a result we have decided to bring in a new software from Hyderabad. Talks are on in this connection?, he told The Telegraph.
With the state police not having a sketch artist either, the need for the new software has become essential.
Confirming the absence of a positive identification technique, Khunti deputy superintendent of police Madhusudan Bari said: ?We have an idea that Dinesh is a well-built man with dark complexion. He must be around 45. Jainath Sao, on the other hand, has grown old now, must be around 55, and is tall and slim. The man still moves around barefoot.?
But again, as he admitted, the identification was not concrete, which is why the force needed the software.
Pradhan, confirming the need for the portrait-maker, said: ?Soon we will have our own state-of-the-art software. This will solve most of the problems faced by the (state) police. The software would be able to easily draw, based on a description, the faces of criminals and the sketch will be perfect.?
Some of these criminals, including Dinesh Gope, Jainath Sao, Vimal Oraon, Israel Mian and Kundan Pahan ? Ranchi sub-zonal Maoists commander ? have never been arrested and police sources disclosed that they had no idea how these people looked like.
Due to the absence of a sketching artist a portrait is also not available, added police officials. All these criminals have been a terror around Ranchi area.
DSP Bari further said: ?We have caught some of their henchmen. But there is no artist with us to sketch the criminals? portraits according to the description given by the henchmen.?
It is very much possible that they could appear in front of the police and might not be recognised, he added.
Another police official said they had succeeded in bumping off Suresh Gope and Deo Kumar Oraon as they had pictures of these criminals.
?Suresh Gope, the elder brother of Dinesh, was killed in a police encounter two years ago. The man had a huge gang but we knew how he looked like and he was our target though there were at least 10 to 12 of his men firing at us during the encounter,? said the official and added that when dealing with the dreaded Deo Kumar Oraon, also, they had an identification.
The law-enforcer noted that they did not have any positive identification on the wanted Maoists either.
?The police have no idea how Kundan Pahan, or his group members, look like. Now, how are we going to nab him if we don?t have a positive id on him?? asked another senior police officer.
