Jamshedpur: Polytechnic student Mirza Sadaf Baig (18), who went missing on Thursday from Adityapur Toll Bridge, remained traceless on Friday despite divers being pressed into service in the Kharkai and Subernarekha.

A resident of Mango, the second-year mechanical student of Government Women's Polytechnic in Gamharia is suspected to have jumped from the bridge where her bag and college ID were found.

Adityapur sub-inspector Chandra Bhushan said they had registered a station diary and could not confirm suicide unless the body was found.

"We suspect she jumped into the Kharkai river, which is in spate. Strong currents may have swept her away. We have engaged two divers at Domuhani (the confluence of Kharkai and Subernarekha), but with no luck yet," he added.

Bereaved father Abdul Baig said they had launched a search too. "Sadaf is youngest among my three daughters. She was loved by all. There is no apparent reason for such a drastic step (read suicide)," Baig, a businessman, said.

Ace diver Mazharul Bari said the authorities hadn't sought his services yet.

"If the girl indeed jumped off the bridge, the body is likely to have been swept towards Ghatshila. Police must try near the Galudih barrage. Diving is difficult because the river currents are strong in monsoon," he said, recommending a motor boat search instead. "The body must surface by now because it has been over 30 hours."
