Jamshedpur, Dec. 8: Infuriated by his son?s drinking habits, a father beat his 28-year-old son to death with a baton last night.
The youth, Shyam Sharma, died this morning after being rushed to MGM Hospital late into the night with severe head injuries.
Father Ramrathan Sharma was arrested by police while on his way to perform the last rites of his son.
Other family members and relatives were also accompanying Ramrathan to the cremation ground. The Sharmas are residents of Olidih in Mango area.
After arresting the victim?s father, the police refused to allow the relatives to cremate the body. Instead, the body was taken for post-mortem.
According to the police, the son had returned home intoxicated that day, which peeved his father. As Ramrathan started rebuking him for drinking, the youth retorted back. Soon a scuffle broke out between the two and in a fit of rage the father picked up a baton and smashed his son?s skull. The unconscious Shyam was rushed to the hospital.
The senior Sharma, who worked as a carpenter, was not able to concentrate on his business due to constant family feud over the drinking habit of his son.
Initially, the police was unaware of the matter. Even the hospital authorities did not inform the police due to some reason or the other.
According to police sources, Ramrathan had secured the body of his son and the death certificate secretly from the hospital. However, when Sharma was carrying the body to the cremation ground, someone informed the Olidih police about the murder.
The police are also probing how the MGM authorities issued a death certificate when it was a case of murder.
