Ranchi, Aug. 8: A college girl, accused of stealing a mobile phone of another student, was stripped and paraded inside the campus hostel, her four-hour ordeal last week recorded and then leaked on WhatsApp last night.

The August 1 torment of the BA Part I student, which took place at government-run SP Mahila College in Dumka, 300kmfrom the state capital, and was reported in a section of media today, prompted chief minister Raghubar Das to direct the district administration and Sido Kanhu Murmu University (SKMU) to conduct inquiries.

A news release from Dumka SP M.K. Patel this evening said four students - Anjula Murmu, Sonamuni Murmu, Baby Bera and Bhavani Besra, the first three named in an FIR - had been arrested and sent to judicial custody.

Acting on the CM's order, Dumka deputy commissioner Mukesh Kumar formed a four-member probe committee, headed by additional collector Indu Nath. The pictures and videos, meanwhile, went online last night, prompting a section of the media to report the tribal student's ordeal today.

Dumka SP M.K. Patel said the case was being "carefully probed" and the "culprits" would be brought to book soon.

SKMU pro-VC Munda said they were inquiring into the matter. "Neither the hostel warden nor the college principal informed their higher-ups (the university). Photographs were clicked by non-boarders and it is not known who posted them on WhatsApp. Action will be taken against the principal, warden and students involved," he added.

State parliamentary affairs minister Saryu Roy said ordering a probe and punishing the culprits was no permanent solution. "The government should work out concrete measures in consultation with psychologists, social scientists and academics to prevent rerun of such incidents at academic institutions," he said.
