Jamshedpur: Subscribers of government telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) can now look forward to better Internet service in Jam-shedpur Secondary Switc-hing Area (SSA), comprising East Singhbhum West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan.

The telecom giant has planned to opt for overhead cable system to avoid damages to the prevalent underground cables due to road widening work and laying of power lines.

P. Bharti, sub-divisional engineer (marketing), BSNL, said they had decided to go for the overhead cables as broadband service was being badly effected. "We will now have underground jelly-filled cables for telephone services and overhead cables for broadband. Both telephone and Internet services were being effected at a number of places as several agencies would dig roads to lay power lines or for road widening work. But once the overhead cable system comes into place, there will be no such damage," he added.

Bharti also said the overhead cable system would not only save crores of money of BSNL towards repairing the damaged cables, but also augment the Internet connection.

"Currently all broadband subscribers get five megabits per second, a unit of measurement for bandwidth, but after the overhead cables will be installed, customers will get 50 MBPS speed," added Bharti.

Under the Jamshedpur SAA, there are 34,172 BSNL landline subscribers, including 19,552 broadband subscribers. In Jamshedpur alone, there are 28,100 landline subscribers, out of which over 18,000 subscribe to broadband service.

Bharti further said they were working out on the nitty-gritty of the overhead cable system and things would be put into place within the next two months.

Sources in the BSNL said the underground telecom cables remained intact during any digging work in the Jusco-controlled area in the city, but cables get regularly damaged in places like Mango, Adityapur and Govindpur.

A senior official of the BSNL said the department had decided to provide satellite link to VIP customers in Jamshedpur.

"BSNL will shortly provide satellite link for the cellular service to limited number of consumers in the steel city. As of now East Singhbhum deputy commissioner, senior SP and other senior officers in the Army, paramilitary services and CRPF will be benefited," he said.
