Jamshedpur, Feb. 23: The students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Adityapur, are still in a state of shock over the death of final-year students Rishabh Agrawal and Vishwajit Sahu, who died on campus yesterday due to electrocution.
The duo had gone into the fountain in front of the administrative building of the college on Sunday night. The autopsy report is awaited.
“We cannot believe that our friends are not with us anymore. They were having a good time but who knew that something like this would happen,” said a student, on condition of anonymity.
Some students claimed that they, too, have felt tremors in the fountain when they sat with their feet dipped in the waters. “Some of my friends had complained to the teachers about this earlier, but they were not taken seriously. Even we did not imagine something of this sort could have happened,” said Vijay Raj (name changed), another student.
A section of students alleged that the college fest, Pravah, had also been mismanaged.
A place where about 500 students from about 20 colleges across the country had gathered to compete with each other did not even have adequate safety measures.
“Maybe what happened was an accident but other mishaps could also have taken place. A place with a large number of students should have proper transport facilities but we were not allowed to take vehicles inside the campus. The students had hired about five cars for the event but even that was not allowed on premises. If somebody fell sick, we would have been unable to get immediate aid,” said another student.
Many also complained about the non-availability of a doctor on the campus, especially at the time of a mega event. “We do not have a doctor on campus. There was a dire need of a doctor when the incident took place,” said Raj, adding that students were not happy with the college administration.
On the other hand, dean of students’ welfare S.B.L. Saxena denied the allegations by the students. “We do have a doctor on campus on contractual basis. He was present during the festival. I do not know why the students are complaining,” said Saxena.
All events scheduled for the last day of the event, which was about to take place on Sunday, were cancelled. The college remained closed today due to Shiv Ratri festivity.
