At a time when the rupee is taking a tumble and the dollar is fighting global doldrums, NIT in Adityapur seems to have slain the slowdown.

This placement season for 600 final-year students of BTech and masters in computer application (MCA), from last July to this June, 82 companies across steel, automobile, software, fuel and other sectors have hired over 80 per cent aspirants.

In June, five or six more companies are likely to come head-hunting, making students and placement authorities hope for the 100 per cent placement benchmark.

Last week, salary packages offered on campus peaked as Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) creamed off eight students with an offer of Rs 10.5 lakh per annum each. The PSU giant recruited four students from mechanical engineering and two each from electronics and electrical streams.

IOCL beat other top-paying recruiters who came earlier this season. Oil major Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) had hired three students for an annual package of Rs 10.20 lakh, while computer firm Trident recruited four for a yearly sum of Rs 9.5 lakh.

The companies that recruited the most number of students were, however, belonged to the software sector.

Infosys hired 48 students for a yearly package of Rs 3.25 lakh excluding perks and emoluments. IBM recruited 29 students, offering packages of Rs 3.75 lakh a year. Aricent picked up 27 students with a starting annual salary of Rs 3.5 lakh.

Other recruiters who picked final-year students from the campus included Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Samsung, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Power, Hyundai, Godrej and Vedanta.

NIT training and placement professor in-charge Rajiv Bhushan said he was happy at the placement figures.

“Most of our students have been placed while the number of head-hunters from diverse sectors has also gone up this season. The students of the 2013 batch who haven’t been placed yet have plenty to look forward to in the remaining few days,” he said.

Students are also upbeat. “Campus placements have been good so far. We hope for a 100 per cent success rate this year, which is no mean achievement in a stagnant market. It’s like run-machine Shikhar Dhawan’s batting,” grinned a final-year student who was handpicked by the IOCL.

Do you think all the 600 final-year students of NIT will be placed by June-end?
