Ramesh Kumar Pandey, the new vice-chancellor of Ranchi University (RU), has set his goals fairly early: 12 hour-work days for himself, a corruption-free varsity administration, job oriented courses and timely publication of results.
Pandey, who joined office on Tuesday, admitted his new assignment was a daunting task and that he would have to first assess the strengths and weakness of the institution.
'I have, therefore, requested media persons, university staff and students to work together to bring about changes,' he told The Telegraph at his chamber on campus, even as a host of visitors dropped in to greet him on Day One.
Pandey said he would take concrete steps to ensure transparency and a corruption-free university administration.
'Corruption starts with the moving of files illegally. There are reports that money is changing hands during admissions,' he said, adding that he would, therefore, start a file tracking system by the first week of next month.
'This will help us keep tabs and ensure we improve our financial situation,' he said, but refused to elaborate.
Pandey said his next priority was to eliminate malpractices in university examinations and create a student-friendly environment at the university.
'I have already spoken to pro vice chancellor M. Raizzauddin and controller of examination to regularise the session as examinations have been delayed for several years. I will also try my best for speedy evaluation and publication of results,' he added.
Pandey said he was determined to ensure women's safety on campus and constitute grievance cells at the university and its constituent colleges. 'We will also talk to the police about deploying women police constables,' he added.
As for himself, the vice chancellor promised to work 8am to 8pm. 'You see, there are a lot of things that need to be done. Personally, I believe in moving forward rather than backward and eliminating loopholes. I need to hasten the process to bring changes in our system,' he said.
Pandey said he would review the university's vocational courses and incorporate more job oriented courses. 'We will be holding talks with TISS officials to introduce new courses. On Wednesday, we have invited the Azim Premji Foundation for campus interviews,' he signed off.
