Dhanbad: Kameshwar Bis-was took over as the principal of Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) here on Wednesday. He replaced Arun Kumar who has been appointed principal of the newly established medical college in Hazaribagh.

"Launching of post-graduation courses is on top of my list. We would seek Medical Council of India's nod after obtaining affiliation for the courses from Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) soon," Biswas, the former superintendent of the hospital, said.

His other priorities include improving the college's infrastructure and procuring crucial equipment such as ventilators for the neonatal care unit, the tenders for which have been already floated by the institute last month.

A VBU team had visited the hospital on March 11 to inspect the infrastructure for launching the PG courses. The institute plans to launch courses in 16 subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, preventive and social medicine, medicine, skin, paediatrics, surgery, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, radiology, opthalmology, ENT, gynaecology and obstetrics.

The hospital had applied for PG courses in 2014 and 2016 but did not get MCI nod because of manpower shortage and inadequate infrastructure. The situation is, however, different this year as the state government had already initiated the process of promotion of teachers and hiring junior doctors.

"The process of appointing junior doctors has already begun. The college has already received applications from four doctors out of 60 vacancies," Biswas said and added that appointment of senior residents and tutors is likely to the completed before March 28.

Besides the appointment orders of Biswas and Kumar, the state government had also issued two more notifications on Monday. They include Dr Harivansh Singh being appointed principal of the newly established medical college and hospital in Dumka and R.Y. Chaudhary being made the principal of the new medical college in Palamau. While Chaudhary is the former superintendent of MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur, Singh was the head of the department of preventive and social medicine of PMCH.
