Ranchi, July 1: A vetting from National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has been mandatory for the four technical institutions of the state under World Bank assisted Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).
The four institutes, including BIT, Mesra, BIT, Sindri, and two polytechnics based in Ranchi and Dumka have to seek clearance from NBA before September. The institutes received more than Rs 34 crore in the past couple of years under TEQUIP. But except BIT, Mesra, the performance of the rest is not up to the mark.
NBA is an autonomous body constituted by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The accreditation helps stakeholders in identifying programmes with excellence in technical education.
“Two undergraduate and five postgraduate programmes of BIT, Sindri, awaits NBA accreditation. Under TEQUP it is mandatory for the covered institutions to get NBA accreditation. The state institutes ought to get the same by September,” said technical education director Arun Kumar.
Kumar, who today returned from Delhi after taking part in the ninth review meeting of TEQUIP, said: “BIT, Sindri, considered to be lone government engineering college in the state enjoying reputation, has NBA accreditation for the next three years with effect from May 4, 2007 for seven undergraduate programmes. The trades include civil, mechanical, production, electrical, chemical, metallurgy, electronics and communication and mining.”
Interestingly, NBA accreditation given to BIT, Mesra, has expired and needs fresh appraisal. Earlier, 16 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the institution enjoyed the accreditation.
The polytechnics based at Dumka and Ranchi never applied for NBA accreditation. The institutes and state government erred on an important aspect of qualifying for TEQUIP programme.
TEQUIP, whose time-limit has been increased till March 2009 (from earlier June 2008), may consider more institutions of the state in the next phase. But the authorities are not satisfied with the progress of BIT, Sindri and two polytechnics.
Union ministry of human resource development would submit the ninth review of TEQUIP in Delhi on Friday.
