Bhubaneswar, Oct. 12: There is no place for indiscipline and dissent in the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). That?s the message party chief Naveen Patnaik has sent out to an MP who pointed a finger at the chief minister.
On Friday, Patnaik suspended Aska MP Harihar Swain from the BJD for ?anti-party? activities. Swain?s suspension order followed outbursts aimed at the BJD chief.
Patnaik decided to suspend the MP after several legislators and ministers urged him to act against Swain, who had been accusing the chief minister of being surrounded by a coterie of bureaucrats and hangers-on.
The Aska MP questioned the chief minister?s style of functioning while addressing two public meetings in his constituency, one attended by Patnaik himself.
?I called up Patnaik on September 6, 7 and 8 for an appointment to discuss the affairs of the constituency. However, on every occasion I was told that the CM was busy. If the CM has no time to speak to an MP, just think what would be his attitude towards the common man,? argued Swain.
Early last week, six BJD legislators had urged Patnaik to take immediate action against Swain for launching a ?tirade? against the party leadership.
?His utterances have damaged the image of the party and its leader,? BJD leader and Orissa energy minister Suryo Patra said.
The legislators also called for a boycott of all activities of the MP and alleged that he was in regular touch with the Congress leaders of his constituency.
Political analysts feel the BJD still revolves around Patnaik, who can brook no opposition.
Besides, the BJD is yet to see an organisational election or a membership drive.
