Meet focus on library software

Ranchi, June 4: More than 75 representatives of different colleges and institutes like IIT, Kharagpur, and Banaras Hindu University today discussed the benefits of Koha, an integrated library management software, at a meet at BIT, Mesra.

The experts asked the librarians in attendance to enrich their knowledge on the software used to manage libraries.

Arun Kumar Chakraborty, the general secretary of Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centre (IASLIC), explained to the participants the benefits and adaptability of the software in managing libraries. “The software is compatible to all types of libraries,” said Chakraborty, who himself is a librarian, advising participants to install this system in their libraries.

The workshop covered technical details of installation of Koha on Windows, customisation and configuration, demonstration of all modules like acquisition, cataloguing, serial control, circulation among other functions.

The library in-charge of Central Library of BIT, Mesra, Vijayakumar M, said: “Koha, meaning gift, is really a legacy for librarians. The software can be installed and adapted to the need of a particular library by the librarians themselves.”

Representatives of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, Central Library of Ranchi University, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Library, IGNOU (Ranchi unit) participated in the meet.
