Maths lab on CBSE menu

Dhanbad, April 17: In an attempt to make students aware of the importance of mathematics, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced Mathematics laboratory and internal assessment for the students, who will appear in the Class X examination from 2007.

According to the notification, it will consist of 20 marks, of which 10 will be given on the evaluation of skills and five marks each on assessment of record works and assessment through summative and formative tests. Sources said a team visited different schools of Dhanbad and Bokaro and made an on-the-spot survey of their Mathematics laboratories in the second week of April. All the schools were asked to get their Mathematics laboratory ready by March 31.

The labs have started functioning for the students of Class IX from the academic session of 2005-06 so that they do not find it difficult while appearing for the board examination in 2007, sources said.

According to the notification, taking a cue from the tsunami, the board has also decided to introduce frontline curriculum on disaster management in social sciences at the secondary stage for the examination in 2006.

The disaster management subject will introduce topics like survival skills, alternative communication system during disasters, self-construction practices and sharing responsibility. The notification said the component of disaster management would carry eight marks in the theory paper of Social Science.

In another development, CBSE has also introduced Environment Science education as a compulsory subject in schools from Class I to XII from coming session, sources said. Talking to The Telegraph, six principals of different schools of Dhanbad and Bokaro said the introduction of practical lessons and laboratory in Maths will make students more responsible and steady towards their studies.

?Internal assessment will bring discipline among the students. The board has also taken a wise step in introducing topics on disaster management,? said the chief of the education of Bokaro Steel Plant Shitanshu Prasad.
