Jamshedpur, April 30: Three school students, who scored good marks in science, have been given an opportunity to visit the Himalayas for the first time.

Krishna Soren, Guru- pada Mardi and Anand Mahto are a part of the team which is heading to the Garhwal region for an out- door development progra-mme of the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. The trip is being sponsored by the Tata Steel Rural Development Society, which is making efforts to bring the underprivileged children from rural pockets into the social mainstream.

While Soren, a Class X student of Sidhu Kanhu Shiksha Niketan (Dimna) sco- red over 80 per cent marks in science, Mardi of Class IX at Middle School, Kaly-anpur, in Chilgu (Serai- kela-Kharsawan) came up with 80 per cent marks. Mahto, also a students in Class IX at Kolebira High School in West Singhbhum, obtained 85 per cent.

Tata Steel Rural Deve- lopment Society, which is promoting science in rural areas, selected the students to help them learn more by going to the Himalayas.

“During a science exhi- bition at Middle School, Kalyanpur, and Sidhu Kan- hu School, we found that students came up with some very good demonstration. Mardi made a very good model. The participation level was quite satisfying. It indicated that rural stud- ents were very interested in science,” said Sanjukta Nayak, a former manager of Tata Steel Rural Development Society.

Tata Steel Adventure Foundation secretary P.P. Kapadia said the boys would join a team from Jusco and Tata Motors (Lucknow unit) to the Himalayas. “It would be a 10-day trip and the team is leaving tomorrow,” he added.

According to him, the team will stay at the base camp in Uttaraon (near Uttar Kashi) for some days before heading to the Dayara Top. Various kinds of activities would be part of the outdoor development programme.

Kapadia added that the three rural boys would come back enriched with knowle- dge about the Himalayas, its terrain, geographical aspects and other things which they have only heard of till date.

“It would expose them to a different world and would get to face hardships which would make them more stronger mentally as well as physically,” Kapadia said.

Tata Steel Rural Deve- lopment Society will also send some tribal boys from West Bokaro and Jamshe-dpur and its surroun- ding areas for a exposure trip to the Garhwal this November.
