Jamshedpur, July 16: Inspector-general of police (Jharkhand Armed Police) and head of state police athletics wing Manjari Jarwar said aspiring police athletes from the state would be trained to bag medals in the national as well as international meets.

She was on a day’s visit to the steel city today.

Manjari went to the police barracks at Sakchi Garamnullah and talked to police athletes and officials about the condition of the sportsmen in police departments. Manjari said she would bring about a sea-change in the existing infrastructural facilities for police athletes soon.

Manjari said Jharkhand has run short of sportspersons. She added that those who had earned name and fame to the police department of the erstwhile Bihar belonged to Jharkhand, but they have become old.

“Jharkhand has produced many excellent sports persons till date. But in the police department, the number of athletes has gone down over the past few years. The ones who would once bring laurels to the erstwhile Bihar police have become old. The gap must be filled soon,” the IG said.

Elaborating on her plan, Manjari said the new recruits in the police department would be screened to select young policemen with potential.

Those selected among the new recruits would be given state-of-the-art training.

“I have planned to get the fresh recruits in the police department trained by coaches of international repute,” the IG said.
