Ranchi, Nov. 6: Girls, who cringe at the thought of asking for money from their parents for every little thing, can now heave a sigh of relief.

Women, who have passed the intermediate examinations, can now try their hands at working as Life Insurance agents.

The idea is the brainchild of Ranchi Women’s College (RWC) principal Manju Sinha, who feels that girls joining LIC would be “financially independent” by the time they graduate. RWC would organise a training programme for the girls on the college premises in association with the insurance company.

LIC would conduct the specialised training course for the “student” agents, where they will taught about different policies and client motivation.

Sinha, a member of the Policy Holders’ Council of LIC, had suggested to include girls as agents for the insurance major in one of its meetings.

The council meets once every six months and its objective is to suggest plans and programmes to improve the standing of the company.

Sinha said girls who have just passed out from school are often forced to discontinue studies because of financial crunch in the family. If they can work as insurance agents they can continue with their studies, said Sinha.

“The girls have very high expectations when they start college and often go astray in their bid to earn a few extra buck. This opportunity of working while studying is a unique way of helping them continue studies,” said Sinha.

LIC senior division branch manager Bishnu Charan Patnaik told The Telegraph that the company has decided to train girls because they are sincere and can target housewives and working women, said Patnaik.

“The girls will be trained to deal with their prospective clients and the details of the different policies. The trainees will also have to sit for a written test and face an interview before they qualify as LIC agents,” Patnaik said.

“The girls will earn a commission on the number of policies that they sell and will also get a ‘renewal commission’ at the end of the year depending on the number of policies they have sold. The company will also help and support the trainees during their field visits,” Patnaik said.
