Bistupur's sky turned into a canvass of colours as members of the Gujarati community flew kites to usher in festivities during Uttarayan, an annual competition now synonymous with Makar Sankranti, at Biswajit Manimela Ground on Tuesday.
Organised by Gujarati Sanatan Saheli, the women's wing of Gujarati Sanatan Samaj, the event saw around 65 participants, including both men and women, exhibit ing their kite-flying skills.
Around 200 Gujarati families thronged the grounds, creating an electric atmosphere, as the participants conquered the sky as well as the hearts of onlookers with kites of different colours, shapes and sizes as well as the skill in flying them.
'Over the past six years, the contest has emerged as a platform for showcasing Gujarati traditions. Also, it serves as a platform where community members come together to celebrate the festival,' said Bindu Joshi, secretary of the Gujarat Sanatan Saheli.
The competition was held in two categories. In one, the kite was judged by its appearance. In the other, for its ability to bring down other kites.
Dhaval Patel (20), a resident of Sakchi and one of the youngest participants, won the first category with her vibrant, four-feet kite. 'The kite's seven colours and the butterfly shape tilted the scales in her favour,' said Vinita Shah, a senior functionary of the women's outfit.
Naina Patel (28), also from Sakchi, was adjudged second for her two-feet kite that resembled an eagle.
Sangeeta Patel finished third with her owl-like kite.
As far as 'hunting' kites went, Kirit Ardeshra (45), a Bistupur resident, brought down a maximum numbers of five kites to win the title in the second category.
Dhaval Patel cut three kites to become second while Jayanti Ardeshra pushed two kites out of the competition to finish as third.
All winners were given mementos as the outfit does not promote cash prizes.
To add to the fun, special stalls of traditional festive dishes such as theplas, gathias , jalebisand others were set up at the grounds.
