Increasing the capacity of Keenan Stadium, along with the legal implications of a future handover to Jharkhand State Cricket Association, were among the issues discussed at a meeting on Wednesday of Tata Steel and JSCA officials on the turnaround of Jamshedpur's iconic venue.

Among those who took part in the meeting, which was held at Chemmury Guest House at Northern Town in the afternoon, were Tata Steel corporate services chief Rituraj Sinha, his counterpart in the sports wing Farzan Heerjee and JSCA secretary Rajesh Verma. Deliberations went on for over an hour.

Sources revealed that the JSCA secretary wanted to understand Tata Steel's position on extending a portion of the stadium to increase seating capacity and on the possible tenure of a sub-lease agreement that would have to be signed in case Keenan was to be handed over to the state association to hold international cricket matches.

Both parties discussed the extension of the Old Pavilion for constructing new galleries, which effectively means that the portico of the Old Pavilion would have to become a part of the stadium.

The road near Sir Dorabji Tata Park may also become part of Keenan if both sides decide on taking up more space.

JSCA also sought a written agreement from Tata Steel, the custodian of the stadium, on the Keenan revamp.

"I told Tata Steel representatives that the area of the stadium needs to be extended. I also wanted to know for how many years the stadium could be sub-leased to us. It is the Old Pavlion only that can be extended as it will not be practical to seek space behind Naoroji Pavilion, Media Centre and galleries near the JRD Tata Sports Complex," Verma told The Telegraph.

While Straight Mile Road snakes along the Naoroji Pavilion, Media Centre is inside the JRD Tata Sports Complex compound. There is also no scope for extending the galleries, which is located at a touching distance of the JRD Tata Sports Complex. So, the Old Pavilion is the only option left for increasing the area of the stadium.

Tata Steel sports wing chief Heerjee was not forthcoming. He said discussions were at an early stage and both sides would meet again. "But we have conveyed our willingness at the meeting," he remarked, indicating Tata Steel's intent to bring back international cricket to Jamshedpur.

Sources revealed that the steel major sought an assurance from JSCA that the schedule of its own tournaments at Keenan would not be hampered in case the stadium was sub-leased to JSCA. Talks also revolved around profit sharing and the display of Tata Steel logos on the sight screens.
