Jugsalai municipality, one of the local civic bodies of Jamshedpur, has started steps to launch door-to-door waste collection from Wednesday.

The urban civic body made the announcement through the public address system on Tuesday.

According to Jugsalai Municipality officials, seven vehicles - Mahindra garbage tippers priced Rs 6 lakh each - would be deployed.

Special officer of Jugsalai Municipality Surendra Prasad said the initiative would bring about a big change in cleanliness at Jugsalai, one of the biggest commercial-cum-residential areas in the city.

"Door-to-door waste collection will be carried out by a private agency. Waste collectors will blow their whistles near each house to collect garbage around 9am. The garbage will be then carried in tippers to the disposal site at Karandih and Bagbera. Initially, we will start with four vehicles. The rest three tippers will cover more areas in the coming days," said Prasad.

Jugsalai has a population of around 60,000 to 65,000. For the convenience of waste collection, the locality has been divided into various zones. The door-to-door facility will cover around 6,000 houses.

According to a rough estimate, Jugsalai generates 0.50 tonnes of waste daily.

Without door-to-door waste collection so far, residents disposed of their domestic and other wastes at the bins placed at various spots.

Residents lauded the civic body for the new initiative.

"With doorstep collection, we can get rid of garbage that is often littered on road and in drains. The civic body should ensure the drive is implemented properly," said Ashok Agarwal, a resident of Gouri Shankar Road in Jugsalai.

Asked about the delay in the service - Jugsalai Municipality was supposed to start it on October 2 during Gandhi Jayanti as a part of Centre's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan - an insider said the first tender had failed to get a bidder. The second one did.
