Jamshedpur, Jan. 2: Indian classical vocalist Zia Fariduddin Dadar of the Kashmiri gharana, along rudra veena guru Bahauddin Dadar, will perform dhrupad and rudra veena jugalbandi in the city.

The show will be part of a 15-day convergence of cultures “Jharkhand Virasat 2003” to be organised by SpicMacay, along with various city-based educational institutions. The show will also see gurus of Indian classical music and art recreate magic at various other places across the state.

Performances by celebrated artistes and two workshops conducted by gurus of various field will be the highlight of the mega cultural extravaganza to be held from January 15 in various schools and colleges.

Apart from the city, the programme, an annual national event of SpicMacay, is scheduled to be held in Ranchi, Dhanbad, Giridih, Bokaro and Hazaribagh, said Deval Narayan secretary of the Jamshedpur chapter of SpicMacay.

Educational institutions that have volunteered to organise the events are Xavier Labour Relation Institute (XLRI), National Institute of Technology (NIT), Faculty of Mass Communication, Graduate School College for Women, Al Kabir Polytechnic, Loyola School, Jamshedpur Public School, Gulmohur, Motilal Nehru Public School and Kashidih High School.

“There is scope for other schools and colleges to join in. We hope to involve as many institutions as possible to bring major portion of the youth under the umbrella of this educational event,” said Narayan.

“Entry to the shows will be open to other music and art lovers of the city as well. Some of the performances will be on school premises so that students are exposed to the culture. However, most of the classical renditions are scheduled to be held at Tata Auditorium to accommodate a larger audience,” he added. While Pandit Raghunath Seth, guru of celebrated flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, will soothe the audience with his rare mastery of the flute, the creative brilliance of sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez will mesmerise connoisseurs of classical music.

Apart from vocalists, Vinayak Torvi and Ajay Pohankar, Iqbal Hussain Banda Nawazi and group from Hyderabad promise to bring out the flavour of Sufism in their qawali performance.

The two-day workshops on calligraphy, a fading art form, and yoga are aimed at providing the city youth a proper platform to hone their artistic skills.
