Musical evening at khadi mela
Ranchi: A ghazal programme was organised at the ongoing khadi mela on the district school campus on Tuesday.
The main attraction at the show was singer Banashree from Calcutta. Her rendition of the song, Tum jo itna muskura rahe ho, from the film, Arth, was appreciated by all.
ocal singer Santosh mesmerised the audience with songs of different seasons like Sawan ki badiyon ki tarah ye nain bhige huay. The orchestra included artists from Asansol in West Bengal. A cultural programme will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday.
Security beefed up
Jamshedpur: Police have made elaborate arrangements to ensure a safe and peaceful New Year for the residents of the steel city.
Superintendent of police Arun Kumar Oraon has directed police officials to deploy additional forces to major road in the city. Police sources said eye will be kept on eve-teasing and drunken driving to minimise incidence of accidents.
According to Oraon, officers-in-charge of different police stations have been asked to maintain constant vigil. The district police have requested the administration to stop sale of liquor for a couple of days starting from December 31.
Reliance gift for subscribers
Ranchi: Reliance Mobile on Tuesday announced a New Year’s gift for prepaid Smart subscribers.
Subscribers will get talk time in vouchers worth Rs 1,000. The effective call time will be Rs 926, while the remaining amount will be deducted as service tax.
The offer will be launched on December 31 and will remain open till January 31.
The company has also reduced tariff charge on its group massaging service. Now, subscribers can send SMS to 20 persons at one time. The cost per SMS will be 50 paisa.
Arms racket
Jamshedpur: Raj Kishore Yadav was arrested from his house at Railway Lal Building in Bagbera on Monday for for illegal possession of fire arms.
Two double-barrelled guns were recovered from him. A task force, led by Bagbera officer-in-charge Arvind Kumar Singh, raided Yadav’s house following a tip-off.
According to sources, the police team has been raiding houses in and around Parsudih to nab two of Yadav’s associates.
Police suspect that Yadav was involved in an arms racket.
Cricket squad
Jamshedpur: A 15-member squad was announced by the Bihar Cricket Association for the Ranji Trophy match to be played at the steel city from January 4 to 10.
The squad includes, captain Sumit Panda, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wicket keeper), Rajiv Kumar, Mohit Goyal, Keshav Kumar, Shahid Khan, Anshuman Raj, Mihir Diwakar, Shiv Shankar Rao, Santosh Lal, Sanjeev Gupta, Kaushik Ghosh, Sandip Vig, Amrinder Singh and Amit Kumar Singh.
Samar Bose will be the team coach while Gobindo Mukherjee will be the manager.
Hockey trials
Jamshedpur: Selection for the sub-junior (under-14) state team for the 15th K.D. Singh Babu Memorial Hockey Tournament, to be played at Lucknow from January 22 to February 2, would be held at Birsa College hockey on January 13.
According to Jharkhand Hockey Association general secretary Pir Mohammed, aspiring players will have to contact Dasrath Mahto, an official of the association.
Paralympic
Jamshedpur: The sixth senior and the first junior national Paralympic Games would be held at Bangalore from February 1 to 5.
The Paralympic Committee of Jharkhand has requested participants to register themselves with “Child's Concern”.
The games will include events such as power lifting, table tennis, swimming, athletics and volleyball.
Mecon
Ranchi: Eleven deputy general managers of Mecon have been promoted to the post of general managers.
While six have been posted at Ranchi, the others have been posted at New Delhi, and Banglore. They will takecharge from January 1.
