Indian archers reign supreme

Jamshedpur, March 9: Indian archers presented a fabulous show by picking up 37 gold medals, 21 silvers and four bronze medals on the final day of 2nd South Asian Archery Championship at JRD Tata Sports Complex today.

Nepal archers managed one gold, six silvers and eight bronze medals in the championship and Bhutan secured the third place with 10 silvers and eight bronze medals.

India won gold medals in men and women recurve sections and men’s compound section in the championship. In the men’s individual recurve round, Raju Adonda of India scored a brilliant 110 to become the champion, while Nepal’s Prem Prasad Pan secured the second place with 104 points.

The team of Raju Adonda, Rajib Basumatary and Anurag Kamal scored a 214 to secure the top slots, while Bhutan archers scored 200 points to come second in the men’s recurve section. In the women’s recurve round, Vardhineni Pranitha romped home after scoring 100 points leaving Dorji Dema of Bhutan with 93 points to secure the second place.

Indian women archers again reigned supreme in the recurve section with V. Pranitha, Balmai Hansda and Pratima Boro scoring 183 with Bhutan archers following them. Sri Lankan archers stood third.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Swansi of India became the individual champion in the men’s compound round, scoring 114. Deepak Karmakar, also of India, came second scoring 109.

Archers from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and India took part in the championship. The meet was held under Indian (Bamboo), recurve and compound divisions.
