Jamshedpur: Students and parents milling around the college counters or making a frantic dash from one department to another for correct information are a common sight, particularly during admissions and exams.

At least one college has woken up to the need of streamlining the process.

Karim City College in Sakchi has started a permanent help desk to offer all information on admissions, departments, exams, college events and updates besides issues related to Kolhan University.

"We have recently inaugurated the help desk that not only serve as a one-stop information centre but also also reduce the rush of visitors to various departments. The help desk will be manned by a trained person. This is for the first time that a college has thought about the needs of the students and parents," said Yahiya Ibrahim, a senior faculty member of the college.

The college administration is working on connecting the help desk with the Internet and other departments and offices.

The college - which has already introduced radio-frequency ID cards for students and teachers, a digital library, a proper management information system or swiping machines for payments - has decided to put up four digital notice boards on its premises. It is also planning to install LED screens in common rooms.

"Very few students take the pain of going near the notice board. Digital boards will keep students posted about the latest developments. Information will be fed daily regarding the change of class timings, holidays and other important updates," Ibrahim said.

Students of the college have welcomed the developments.

"This is one of the best colleges of the university. In the past couple of years, the college has introduced many innovative digital solutions that have helped the students. The college is implementing things slowly but steadily. The help desk will be a boon for students who quite often don't have the correct information. Digital boards are a modern way to attract students' attention," third-year student Abhishek Kumar said.
