Hazaribagh, July 25: The state government has cleared the proposal to set up a tiger and deer safari in Hazaribagh.

Divisional forest officer (DFO) N.K. Singh told The Telegraph today that the proposal has been pending for many years. He said after clearance from the state finance ministry, it would be forwarded to the zoological authority of India.

“We have to take permission from the Supreme Court to obtain the ‘no objection’ certificate,” he added.

Singh said the estimated cost of the project is Rs 6 lakh. “80 hectares around the foothills of Canary Hill will be used. Out of the total land, 55 hectares will be allotted for the deer safari and the remaining for tiger safari,” Singh said.

The DFO said tourists would able to see deer and tigers while touring the safari in jeeps.

The safari would be a natural breeding centre for the species and check the alarming deterioration in their population.

Singh said the safari would initially have nine tigers and nine deer. Besides, he said, some deer from the national park would also be transported to the safari. The DFO said his department has taken up large-scale afforestation in Hazaribagh on a priority basis.
