Durga is on Facebook. Or more to the point, simulated Facebook that's larger than life.
Created by Jamshedpur-based Golmuri Circus Maidan Durga Puja and Kali Puja committee, a giant flex cut-out of the 'Facebook' home page has a selfie of the goddess as the profile picture and a collage of the warrior goddess in her various avatars, husband Shiva and son Ganesh as the cover picture.
And that's not all. She has nine friend requests from other goddesses and is being followed live by Ganesh, Shiva, Kali, Saraswati and Krishna, among others. The 'home page', a staggering 40feet x 30 feet, is outside the pandal.
While a traditional 12-feet clay idol resides inside the pandal, the giant flex with Durga's profile has been put up to attract youngsters who remain hooked to various online sites 24/7.
According to committee members, the purpose of this innovative eye-catcher was to portray the growing influence of social media in life.
'We wanted something attractive without spending much. So, we decided to highlight social media in a unique way. Apart from the huge flex with Durga's FB profile picture, we have also put up logos of Twitter and Instagram inside the pandal,' committee secretary Amish Agarwal said, adding everything has been done with a budget of Rs 3 lakh. 'We wanted to show that social media can help in promoting peace and harmony in society,' Agarwal said.
The committee, which has been organising the Puja since 1926, is also promoting central government schemes through thermocol cut-outs. 'We have showcased Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Digital India, demonetisation to curb black money,' Agarwal added.
'Devotees are liking the idea,' BJP district president Dinesh Kumar, who inaugurated the pandal on Monday, said.
