Jamshedpur, June 30: Celluloid Chapter has a German treat in store for film lovers of the steel city. The Centre for Excellence would be the venue for the 11-day German film festival starting July 3.

The festival will showcase legendary writer-cum-director Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s films, which depict human relationships with panache and sensitivity. It is no wonder then that his films have won a number of national and international awards.

Celluloid Chapter general secretary Amitava Ghosh said the festival will include the following films — I Only Want You to Love Le, Fear Eats the Soul, Chinese Roulette, Despair and The Marriage of Maria Braun.

“All the films are typical depictions of the European psyche in different phases of life,” he said, adding, “there is a lot of difference between the Indian and European psyches, especially where marriage is concerned. Since the festival will be a different experience altogether, it is my opinion that a lot of people will be interested to see these movies.”

Ghosh said I Only Want You to Love Me, produced by Peter Marthesheimer and drawn from an interview in the book Lebenlanglich by Klaus and Christiane Ehrhardt, is a story of a neglected individual. Chinese Roulette, produced by Jean-Francois Stevenin and Fassbinder, revolves around extra-marital affairs. These two films, he claimed, would be the chief attractions of the festival.

The Vitus Zeplichal and Elke Aberle-starrer, I Only Want You to Love Me, tells the tale of Peter, who spends his adolescence feeling profoundly neglected by his parents.

After marrying his childhood sweetheart Erika, he leaves home and settles down in a flat in a big town with his wife. However, Peter’s modest income can barely support his wife’s demands and their requirements in the big city. The pressure drives him crazy and he ends up committing a murder.

Based on an authentic case-history, the film is one of Fassbinder’s most simple and personal works.

In the Margit Carstensen and Andrea Schober-starrer, Chinese Roulette, businessman Gerhard Christ and his wife Ariane are tricked by their daughter Angela to arrive at theircountry house with their respective lovers at the same time.

Angela, a physically-challenged child, also arrived with her nurse Traunitz. In the end, Ariane shoots Traunitz.
